South Africa

Rocklands has a large amount of fantastic lines with different styles and sizes and mostly with juggy top outs, the landscape is beautiful and the sunsets are breathtaking, cheap but delicious meat and red wine. Yes I am confirming the facts that almost everybody knows or has heard about the place. This trip was my first to this continent and somehow I don’t think it is quite that similar to most of the African countries. To me ZA was more like European country with African nature and animals. It is its continents the most developed country with stabile politics and good economical growth, but also the country with one of the highest income inequalities. Comparing the food prices e.g. to Sweden there is not that huge of a difference but labor is very cheap so the salaries are so much more lower. I don’t know how these people actually survive. Considering that the working class is black and knowing the history of the country you could sense some bubbling in smaller cities/towns, but I guess changes do not happen in one night.

Four weeks was absolutely too short time, at least for me, the first week was super nice but then I injured my shoulder so that I couldn’t fasten a seatbelt without yelling from pain. The following two weeks went in recovering, but I still was able to climb, I just had to pick suitable problems and decrease the level. The last week was nice, but it ended too soon, two months would have been a better choice. Travel tips would be: take your sleeping bag even if staying in a cabin - it is coold, do a lot of uphill running or some kind of leg conditioning because when carrying 15-20 kg in your back and having 45-60 minute hilly approaches you get sore legs and that might inhibit your climbing. I was definetely not prepared for it, the approach to my home boulders varies from 1 min to 15 min on a plain so for me it took about 2 weeks to get used to the walking without pain…

Such a nice and beautiful place with good people, definetely worth going to from longer distances as well. Some climbing pictures, all of them were taken by Mr. pink tights, aren’t they just luvely!?
